How to fix random crashes of Windows Media Player with USB devices?

On both my PC and my notebook, the latest version of WMP crashes either randomly or when I plug in different USB devices like my micro sd card from my cell or. Running XP home on PC and Vista Ultimate on the notebook. It also crashes if I try to play certain files, but I haven't noticed a pattern. I do all the updates, so what's the deal?
